Evolution of a painting: Blue Duet

When I start a painting I have a clear intention in my mind. The sense of place is of primary importance…what did it sound like, feel like, smell like to be in that landscape. I work from plein air paintings/drawings, making small graphite studies to establish the overall composition, but it’s an evolutionary process for me so I’m not always sure how it will resolve.

It is painted over another painting that didn’t make it through that compression of discovery…I had thought it was close a number of times, but it wasn’t to be…at least I had a killer underpainting to respond to!
