When I start a painting I have a clear intention in my mind. The sense of place is of primary importance…what did it sound like, feel like, smell like to be in that landscape. I work from plein air paintings/drawings, making small graphite studies to establish the overall composition, but it’s an evolutionary process for me so I’m not always sure how it will resolve.
Here are process photos of a recently finished piece, Blue Duet, 36 x 36, acrylic on canvas. It is painted over another painting that didn’t make it through that compression of discovery…I had thought it was close a number of times, but it wasn’t to be…at least I had a killer underpainting to respond to!
